Amazing what happens when you can’t sleep. Finished up the last episode of Metal Evolution on vh1 and I got to thinking alot about grunge and grunge light and does it fit into the scheme of metal. You can see some influences of metal in the music that grunge flirts with in the heavier guitar styling and rhythms for example. The lyrics are very angst filled and also take a cue from motley crue in terms of drug inspired songs. Grunge I think has more in common with hard rock than metal. Alice in chains and STP though are 2 bands that do bridge the gap in some ways. I would consider the track “Sex Type Thing”, a metal track. Tracks like plush carry the grunge hallmark. Man in the box is a song that oddly is both grunge and metal. Not alot bands could be the best of both worlds and manage to carry it over to mainstream play as well. Grunge was short lived however as it was one of the shortest lived musical movements our there.

Sadly we move into the later part of 90′s that birthed some of my least favorite bands ever. Creed is at the top of that list. Scott Stapp has to be one of the most pompous assholes walking the music scene. Dude comes out and starting saying everyone that hated his music secretly loved it and eventually would buy his albums. The only reason the grunge light movement had it’s success was it was safe commercial friendly crap. Nothing about grunge light says real music. I have to agree with the term imposter bands, because that’s all they were. Bands that were non confrontational and radio friendly, the musical version of John Cena, (ie; get’s shoved down the throats of everyone). The industry tries hard to snuff out the more underground genres that won’t make it money. That’s all it about is control and money. It’s why I don’t get along well with fans of pop music in general among other reasons.

Grunge light I could argue would be a precursor to the abomination known as emo. Another of those self centered creatively devoid movements. The 90′s place in metal history is a turbulent one. Save for metallica and a handful of other metal bands, it nearly disappeared from the mainstream radar, possibly gone altogether. Lars once said it’s good be not fashionable because then it allows you to have longevity. In metal most bands have the choice of when they call it quits, not being forced to call it quits because your no longer profitable. Freedom in music means your not safe. It also means you are gonna be a target by the mainstream. One thing I’ve always believed is true art shouldn’t be safe. True art uses confrontation to make you think and feel things. Metal for me always has always been a way to confront stress and vent. A way to feel empowered. Mainstream and puritanical thinking says that feeling self empowered is a bad thing.

Pop music will always have it’s shifts and bowel movements. Metal will always be metal. Grunge will be another foot note in pop culture. If freethinking and being empowered by my music keeps me in obscurity then I have no problem with that. There’s a fine community of metal fans out there that is doing just fine with out the creeds and nicklebacks of the world. Thanks for reading and see you next time.

I’ll be filming my year in horror later on. This year has been a good year for horror to say the least. 2 of the big standouts from last year made ban lists all over the world. Human Centipede 2 and A Serbian Film. Serbian Film was a good movie but, one that should be approached with caution due to it portrayal of just about every sexual perversion that isn’t safe to out in a movie. The movie lives up to it’s hype. Human Centipede 2, not so much. This one was trying to surpass the 1st film and serbian film and fails. The gore and effects are on the line of being just pure comedy. The main villain isn’t the level of Deter Lazer. Couple that with the lame shit gags and you set yourself up for failure. The movie isn’t horrible, just fails to live up to monster hype.

We also saw one of the worst films I have ever seen shitted on hd shitteo. Hellraiser: Revelations is the worst kind of cash and grab for a franchise. I remember seeing reviews for this and none were good, but I still went in with an open mind. Hellraiser: Cliche would have been a better title. The acting in this film made the wooden acting in blood rayne seem Oscar worthy. The cast looked like they just showed up, got their $50 and left. The cast itself was forgettable and holy unlikeable. Pinhead was the biggest disappointment. As substandard as the other sequels were, at least Doug Bradly stuck with it. Stephen Collins is a very horrible actor and it shows. Not even the other fake pinhead could salvage his performance. This movie was so bad, a friend of mine saw it and it literately gave him pinhead’s revenge worse than a Tijuana titty bar’s salad bar.

We also saw the passing of one of the true horror greats, David Hess. Check out David Hess week for my tribute to this horror Icon.

Stay tuned. The Nasties: The Year in horror is coming soon.

I’m watching the amendment by amendment of SOPA and right now this is the most circus like atmosphere I’ve ever seen in committee. The supporters of this bill have to be some of the rudest people I have ever seen. Bobby Scott throws around a very derogatory use of the word nerd making him look like an uninformed fool. This has a very old generation vs young generation feel to it. We have old members of the committee arguing with the younger members. The old reps don’t understand how the internet works. They present no valid arguments as to why this bill or it’s amendments are a good idea. When valid arguments come up the older reps start being belligerent to someone presenting evidence of why and how this would break the net. As I write this, the Judiciary keeps using the word nerd like a damn cuss word. I’m beginning to think they don’t know what word means vs what they think it means. These old guys do not know how dns works. The info Goodlatte is reading right now is the info the MPAA and RIAA have been sperting out for months now with no evidence to back it. I knew congress and the senate was out of touch but wow just wow.

click on the link to watch the hearing and vote live http://judiciary.house.gov/

*Well for now the vote in total has been put off for the holiday recess. People need to keep the pressure up on these old bastards. If you watched the proceedings from Thursday, you might have seen how out of touch and belligerent the supporters of the bill are. Throwing around the word nerd like a damn cuss. Hopefully after hearing and seeing the effects in action the old bastards wise, but doubtful.
